Brendon Small is the main protagonist of Home Movies. He is the writer, director and lead actor in most of his films.

Background[]

Brendon is a talking, breathing, thinking young boy who acts out his anxieties and problems through his films. He has had his trusty camcorder since just after babyhood, and has been making films incessantly ever since, perhaps because he began around the time his parents got divorced. Though well-meaning, logical, and surprisingly funny, he is consistently determined by apathy, oversight, and occasional egotism; he is really surprised, confused or hurt when his work is criticized.

Despite his questionable wisdom and intelligence in other parts of life, he is surprisingly knowledgeable about films and filmmaking; his first film was a homage to Easy Riders called Eazy Triker's. Brendon is apathetic toward his schoolwork and consistently gets poor grades, most likely due he is preoccupied with making films. It has also been said by a few characters that he is quite feminine, as stated in the episodes The Wedding and Shore Leave, as well as accidentally placing in a tape of him dressed like a girl in Method of Acting. He has also shown an amazing talent for set design and sewing.

Despite his many other obstacles (age, height, personality, dangerous nose), Brendon has become the auteur of his block. With his friends Jason Penopolis and Melissa Robbins, Brendon maintains an amazing ability to turn his personal angst into cinematic angst. Brendon's father left the family years ago, living now with his mother, Paula Small; he has since found father figures in outlandish places, namely local soccer coach John McGuirk.

Appearance[]

Brendon is a short, fair-skinned male with very stiff, wiry red hair. He wears a blue outfit. Compared to Coach McGuirk who is 8'2", He is 4'5" which is the average height of an 7-year-old boy. He also has a long, pointy nose. His hands have four fingers and his feet have four toes.

Trivia[]

Brenden Clarence

Brendon as an adult in Clarence.

  • Brendon appears in every episode of the series.
  • He accidentally taped a video of Fenton's mother naked when she was shaving her armpits after coming out of the shower, and she didn't have a towel.
  • He was bitten by the neighbor's rabid cat.
  • Brendon fantasized Linda wearing a towel really low showing a lot of her cleavage when he and McGuirk were talking about her.
  • Brendon makes a guest appearance in the Clarence episode "Video Store", as an adult video clerk. Brendon Small even reprises his role as the said character in the said episode. Additionally, he also has a photo of a character resembling Coach McGuirk on his desk.
    • However, in that same Clarence episode, Brendon has five fingers instead of four.
  • In the Bob's Burgers episode "The Hurt Soccer", Brendon Small makes a non-speaking appearance in the soccer team Bob Belcher coaches.
  • Brendan has two siblings, albeit not full-blooded biological. He has an adopted younger 2-year-old sister named Josie and an even younger half-brother from his step-mom Linda who was a newborn in the hospital when they first met.
  • Seeing how the series began in 1999 and he was 7 years old in the entire series, Brendon can be considered to be born in 1992-1997, though he is shown never aged, not even in other crossover TV shows, making him one of several tv and or movie or game characters that don’t age properly (very slowly or at all).
  • He has a higher voice than Coach John McGuirk or Paula Small.
  • Brendon looks similar to Phineas Flynn from the show more for kids, Phineas and Ferb, in which the official series debuted in 2007, three years after Home Movies originally ended in 2004. However, it should be noted that the existence of Phineas and Ferb was completely conceived and originally pitched in 1994 with it’s pilot episode/storyboard that was an early version of the first episode “Rollercoaster”, before the release of Home Movies in 1999. this means that if possible, the creators of Home Movies could have seen of the then-pitched character Phineas and took inspiration to design their character Brandon similarly, instead of the other way around like you first assume with the official series premiere years. This however haven’t been confirmed by anyone on the team and it is speculation as of now, and it could be though that Brandon and Phineas’ similar triangular headed-shaped designs (and both having small red hair in similar styles) is just a coincidence and that the likelihood that the Home Movies team could have come across the original pitch for Phineas and Ferb is unknown.
  • Ironically, the pet/secret agent teal furred, orange footed/beaked/tailed platypus in Phineas and Ferb is named Perry, the same name as a character in Home Movies who is best friends with Walter and act as a duo. Linda is both the name of Linda Flynn-Fletcher, Phineas and Candace Flynn’s mom and Ferb Fletcher’s step-mom, and Linda Small, Brendan’s step-mom.
  • Brendon Small is named after his voice actor.
